The LEED certification process is overseen by USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council). What is ECO-MIX Asphalt?
ECO-MIX™ uses a simple process that mixes water and asphalt cement (AC) to create microscopic steam bubbles to “foam” the AC. The binder is foamed, much like shaving cream, using specialized injection equipment.
The foamed binder gives the liquid asphalt the same performance viscosity and volume characteristics at a lower temperature than traditional hot-mix asphalt.
ECO-MIX™ is stored, transported, placed and compacted using the same “traditional” procedures used for hot-mix asphalt.

Less oxidation in ECO-MIX™ extends binder and pavement life
Oxidation of the liquid AC binder leads to increased brittleness and loss of color. For every 25° rise in mixing temperature, oxidation doubles! With roughly 50°F lower mixing temperature, ECO-MIX™ has four times less oxidation, resulting in a greater binder integrity and a longer lasting pavement.
ECO-MIX’s better compaction and workability results in a higher quality pavement
The foamed binder (AC) in ECO-MIX™ increases the lubrication of the mix which, in turn, reduces the viscosity. Lower viscosity allows for an easier, denser compaction and improved pavement durability.
Since the viscosity of ECO-MIX™ remains lower for a greater length of time, placement time is extended, ultimately resulting in higher quality pavements.
ECO-MIX™ extends the available paving season
Traditional hot-mix asphalt depends on high temperatures to maintain proper workability. Thus, cold weather significantly impacts hot mix quality. Because of its foamed asphalt technology, ECO-MIX™ is less dependent on high temperatures and therefore less sensitive to cold weather. Using ECO-MIX™ slows the binder cooling time which results in successful paving during the early and late construction seasons.
ECO-MIX™ reduces carbon emissions
Since ECO-MIX™ processes at a lower temperature, with less energy consumption, carbon emissions (CO2, NOX, VOC), are greatly reduced compared to traditional hot-mix asphalt. Emissions are lowered as much as 25%.
ECO-MIX™ minimizes smoke and smell
The light oils found in asphalt boil at temperatures above 285°F. By mixing Eco-Mix™ at lower temperature, the smoke vapor and smell are almost completely eliminated.
ECO-MIX™ uses greater amount of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)
Asphalt pavement is 100% recyclable. ECO-MIX™ allows for greater percentages of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in the production mix, thus enhancing the overall sustainability of this paving material.
